"These are not qualities you'll find in every dealership in town. In fact, you won't find this combination of looks, performance, handling, high technology, and list price anywhere else but in a Toyota Dealership." - 1985 MR2

One of the quotes of gold from the list. My how things have changed.

Keep in mind when viewing this that in most years car of the year was AMERICAN cars only or cars made in America in the GTI's case. It's also only newly introduced cars. That should explain the PT Cruisers of this list. Import Car of the Year is also included.

It seems like it's a list of the beigest cars from that year; good cars, but just not notable.

Only had to go back to 2012 to find the first shitty car. MT loves to pick terrible cars for their award and then every once and a while pick a decent car to try to maintain their reputation.

Mototrend car of the year generally aims for the the "Best" all around car. A car that is better than its competition without making compromises, so anything with obvious flaws won't be accepted. Cars like the Vega and Corvair's flaws weren't obvious and didn't come about until years after their release.

THIS MEANS.... that 5-6 years after release, looking back most of them appear to be very boring and don't stand out, because when they came out, they were designed to be "really good" all-around cars, half a decade later they are just "alright" cars when everyone else catches up. This deliberately skews the results to look more beige as times goes on.

And even next years... 2015...

Some real duds though, PT Cruiser, 300M, Camry, Prius, 97 Malibu (wow, that suddenly feels like a while ago)

I can understand the Camry. It does a lot of things well but in a pretty mundane manner.

I can also understand the Prius. It was the first popular hybrid. In true modern Toyota fashion it does a lot of things well in a mundane manner.

The others..... Garbage.

Side note: why did they include a few imports when they had a separate category (pre 1999)? Ex: GTI, Renault

I'm curious what other cars were released that year. It was a year when they separated imports and american as well. It could easily be the only american car, or the best one, released that year for all we know.

Yeah, wasn't quite the high point of Murican engineering in the early thousands... But 2001 was also the alleged "decline of Honda" or whatever. I can't think of many interesting [normal-people] cars from that year, but I'm stuck in the '80s, so what do I know.

I could defend those cars as good for any year (Prius/ Camry) but best? I mean the Camry was never a best at anything other than being the blandest. Or was 07 just that bad of a year for all-new cars?

The prius: I think the insight was a much better hybrid (At least more interesting) and came first. It didn't get the press coverage though for some reason.

An side note: I believe they are American made and the Renault was a rebadged AMC (which was a re-engineered Renault)...
